Back in Robert Louis Stevenson’s day, Edinburgh’s New Town was Dr Jekyll and the Old Town Mr Hyde; a place where dark deeds were performed and mood altering substances imbibed. No doubt they still are, especially in the Cowgate on a Saturday night. Look for a cow’s backside emerging from a wall, a tribute to a most prudent wife of unfeigned piety, and directions to what was presumably some form of nocturnal entertainment. Mr Hyde would have approved.
